Crowns

Dental Services

Dental crowns are protective restorations that cover a tooth to restore strength, shape, and appearance after damage or extensive treatment. At McCracken Family Dentistry, crowns are commonly used when a tooth is too compromised for a filling alone, helping you chew comfortably and reducing the risk of future cracking or breakdown.

A crown may be recommended for teeth with large cavities, fractured or heavily worn enamel, or older restorations that no longer provide reliable support. Crowns are also frequently placed after root canal therapy to reinforce the tooth and protect it from splitting under chewing pressure. In some cosmetic situations, a crown can improve the look of a tooth that is misshapen, uneven, or severely discolored.

The process typically involves two visits. At the first appointment, your dentist carefully reshapes the tooth so the crown fits securely, then captures detailed impressions—often with digital scanning—to ensure a precise match. A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while your custom crown is crafted. At the second visit, the final crown is checked for fit, bite alignment, and appearance, then bonded or cemented into place.

Today’s crowns are made from strong, natural-looking materials such as porcelain or ceramic, allowing them to blend with surrounding teeth. With regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental checkups, a crown can last for many years. Avoiding habits like chewing ice, grinding, or using teeth to open packages also helps protect both your crown and your natural teeth.

McCracken Family Dentistry focuses on comfortable care and precision results. If you have a tooth that feels weak, cracked, or heavily filled, a crown may be the right way to restore durability, function, and confidence in your smile.
