A dental bridge is a fixed solution that replaces a missing tooth by filling the open space with a lifelike replacement that stays in place. At McCracken Family Dentistry, bridges are used to restore a complete smile, improve chewing, and help keep the rest of your teeth in proper position. When a gap is left untreated, nearby teeth can drift, the bite can become unbalanced, and the area may be harder to keep clean—raising the risk of gum irritation and additional dental problems.
Most bridges include a replacement tooth (the “pontic”) held securely by support teeth on either side of the gap. Those neighboring teeth are prepared and covered with crowns that anchor the bridge and provide stability during everyday eating and speaking. In certain situations, alternative bridge designs may be considered based on the location of the missing tooth and the condition of surrounding teeth.
The bridge process usually takes two appointments. During the first visit, your dentist prepares the supporting teeth and takes precise impressions (often digitally) so your custom bridge fits comfortably and matches your natural bite. A temporary bridge is placed to protect the area while the final restoration is created. At the second visit, the permanent bridge is tried in, adjusted as needed, and cemented into place for a secure, natural feel.
With good oral hygiene, bridges can serve you well for many years. Cleaning around the bridge is important, and tools like floss threaders or water flossers can help you reach underneath the replacement tooth. McCracken Family Dentistry will guide you on care and help you decide whether a bridge is the right option for restoring your smile.

Our goal is to improve our patients’ health, quality of life, and self-confidence with advanced dental care, delivered compassionately in a relaxed and friendly environment.
