Dental sealants are a preventive safeguard that helps protect the chewing surfaces of back teeth from tooth decay. At McCracken Family Dentistry, sealants are often recommended for children and teens, especially when first and second permanent molars erupt. However, adults with deep grooves or a history of cavities may benefit as well. Because the pits and fissures on molars can be narrow and hard to clean, they’re a common place for cavities to start—even for patients who brush well.
A sealant is a thin, protective coating applied to the biting surface of a tooth. Once placed, it creates a smooth barrier that helps keep food particles and cavity-causing bacteria from settling into the grooves. By sealing these vulnerable areas, the tooth becomes easier to clean and less likely to develop decay.
Placement is quick and painless. The tooth is cleaned and dried, then a gentle conditioning solution is used to help the material adhere. Next, the sealant is brushed onto the enamel and set with a curing light. There is no drilling, and numbing is typically not needed. Patients can chew normally right away.
Sealants are durable and can protect teeth for years, but they are not permanent. During routine checkups, your dentist will inspect the sealants to make sure they remain intact. If they wear down or chip, they can usually be repaired easily.
When paired with good home care, fluoride, and regular cleanings, dental sealants are a smart way to reduce cavity risk and help keep smiles healthy. McCracken Family Dentistry can evaluate whether sealants are a good fit for you or your child.

Our goal is to improve our patients’ health, quality of life, and self-confidence with advanced dental care, delivered compassionately in a relaxed and friendly environment.
