Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment used to manage gum disease and restore healthier gums. At McCracken Family Dentistry, this service is recommended when plaque and tartar build up beneath the gumline and cause inflammation, bleeding, gum recession, or periodontal “pockets” around the teeth. Because gum disease can progress without obvious pain, your dentist may recommend scaling and root planing after a thorough exam and gum measurements.
Scaling removes plaque, bacteria, and hardened tartar (calculus) from the tooth surfaces and below the gums, where a routine cleaning cannot reach. Root planing smooths the root surfaces so bacteria are less likely to reattach and so the gums can heal and tighten around the teeth. Together, these steps help reduce infection, decrease pocket depths, and protect the bone that supports your teeth.
Treatment is typically completed in sections of the mouth and is often performed with local anesthetic for comfort. Afterward, mild soreness or temporary sensitivity—especially to cold—can occur, but most patients return to normal activities the same day. Your dental team will provide aftercare instructions, and in some cases, antimicrobial rinses or localized antibiotics may be recommended to help control bacteria during healing.
Following scaling and root planing, many patients benefit from periodontal maintenance visits scheduled more frequently than standard cleanings. These visits help keep harmful bacteria under control and allow your dentist to monitor pocket depths and gum health over time. Consistent brushing, flossing, and cleaning along the gumline are essential for long-term success.
If your gums bleed, feel swollen, or you’ve been told you have periodontal pockets, scaling and root planing may be an important step toward stabilizing your gum health. McCracken Family Dentistry is here to help you protect your smile and prevent future bone and tooth loss.

Our goal is to improve our patients’ health, quality of life, and self-confidence with advanced dental care, delivered compassionately in a relaxed and friendly environment.
